Dakhani, is ultimately a cultural history of southern India...‘A Tongue Untied’ by Gautam Pemmaraju

Earthy, caustic, funny and declining: Dakhani finally gets its due in documentary ‘A Tongue Untied’The language of the Deccan, famous for its humour and literature, has been relegated to dialect status, as filmmaker Gautam Pemmaraju finds out.

Extract:
When people hear of Dakhani, they tend to associate it with the unique dialect spoken in Hyderabad, often understood by outsiders and locals as a form of hybridised Urdu. There are other associations with Dakhani too – ribald humour and wry social commentary; an idiom so earthy and direct that it might border on insult to more sensitive ears; philosophical reflections on human nature, as in the verse above.
Gautam Pemmaraju’s ambitious documentary A Tongue Untied: The Story of Dakhani explores the cultural history of the language. The production began as a grant from the Indian Foundation for the Arts in 2012 to document the tradition of humour and modern satire in performance poetry. The filmmaker soon found that mere documentation would be inadequate.
People across the Deccan speak forms of Dakhani with regional infusions even today, from its northern reaches in Aurangabad, to Marathwada and Telangana, down southwards to the northern parts of Karnataka. There are a few Dakhani speakers in Tamil Nadu and north Kerala and in Hyderabad, there is even an entire news channel in Dakhani.

Hyderabad Nizam's 50th death anniversary: Family says his contributions neglected

Family members rue that Hyderabad has forgotten the last Nizam's contribution to the city [FirstPoost]

Hyderabad: On the 50th death anniversary of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur, his family rued that the contributions of the architect of modern Hyderabad remained forgotten.
The members of the family on Thursday paid tributes to the VIIth Nizam at his grave at Judi mosque near King Koti Palace, which was his residence.
Nawab Najaf Ali Khan, grandson of the last Nizam, said it was unfortunate that there is neither a day to remember him nor a statue to garland.
"There is not even a lesson in history books in educational institutions to remember the great contributions made by Nizam," he said.

NYTimes.com: 36 Hours in Hyderabad, India By SARAH KHAN

"I wish this piece had come out last week when I was actually in Hyderabad, but that’s OK. In this weekend’s New York Times Travel section you’ll find my guide on what to see, do, and eat in a whirlwind 36-hour stay in one of my hometowns." Image and intro courtesy southafrikhan dot com

Hyderabad is fast cementing its reputation as a formidable global tech capital — Amazon, Google and Facebook have set up offices in the south-central Indian city, and a cutting-edge metro system is in the works. But amid this steady march to the future, the city’s rich past and regal architectural legacy sometimes fall by the wayside. Fortunately, a recent wave of attempts at preservation is helping to save and restore some of Hyderabad’s storied heritage before it’s too late. To immerse yourself in local traditions, the best time to visit might be the month of Ramadan, which starts in June this year. While Muslims fast during daylight hours, the streets surrounding the Charminar monument in Hyderabad’s Old City come alive after dark, transforming into a vibrant night bazaar — thousands of people pack the lanes to feast on haleem and biryani, sip on Irani chai and get a head start on their Eid holiday shopping.

Branding a Commodity: Pista House's 'Hyderabadi Haleem'

Info courtesy: Mohammed Ayub Ali Khan

  • Branding a Commodity: Pista House's 'Hyderabadi Haleem' -- IBSCDC Case Studies, 2009
    Abstract:
Every Muslim welcomes the month of Ramzan, but a Hyderabadi Muslim has something more to rejoice for - the Hyderabadi Haleem, a delicacy, which is available only during that month. It is a tradition to break the daily fast (roza) at Iftar with a plateful of Haleem. The making of the dish, which originated in Saudi Arabia, is mastered to an art form in Hyderabad. However, today, the dish is recognised all over the world by the name - Pista House Haleem. By 2009, Pista House - established as a bakery in 1997 - went on to become an organisation that exports its Haleem to all the major countries across the world. It turned a generic commodity - Haleem - into a unique global brand acquiring a cult like status - 'Pista House Haleem'. However, Pista House Haleem is offered only in the month of Ramzan. Considering the cyclical demand for the product, the way PH scales up its operations and manages quality along with its 'concentrated advantage' is very intriguing and worth emulating. The case deals with the economics of the demand for a cyclical product, management of scaled up operations, branding a commodity and taking such branded commodity global. This case can be used to understand and analyse: (1) the nature of demand for 'Hyderabadi Haleem'; (2) the maintenance of quality in a scaled up operation; (3) the building of a brand around a commodity; and (4) the best approach for the Pista House brand to go global.
